FAQs
What is naloxone (Narcan)?
Naloxone is a medication that can quickly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Narcan is the most well-known brand of naloxone and is commonly available as a nasal spray. Click here for more information.
How does naloxone work?
Naloxone blocks opioid receptors in the brain, which stops the effects of opioids and helps restore normal breathing.
Is naloxone safe to use?
Yes. Naloxone is extremely safe. It has no effect on someone who doesn’t have opioids in their system, so it’s okay to use even if you’re unsure whether someone is overdosing from opioids.
Can naloxone be used on someone if I’m not sure they’ve overdosed?
Yes. If someone is unresponsive and you suspect an overdose, it’s safe to give naloxone. It won't cause harm if you're wrong.
What are the signs of an opioid overdose?
Look for unresponsiveness, slow or no breathing, blue lips or fingernails, gurgling sounds, or pinpoint pupils.
How do I use Narcan nasal spray?
Insert the spray nozzle into one nostril and press the plunger firmly. Call 911 and stay with the person until help arrives. A second dose can be given in the other nostril if needed. Click here for more information.
Where can I get naloxone?
You can often get naloxone at pharmacies without a prescription, through community organizations, or harm reduction programs. Availability varies by location.
Do I need a prescription to get naloxone?
In most states, you don’t. Many pharmacies offer it over the counter.
Can I carry naloxone legally?
Yes. It is legal to carry naloxone in all 50 U.S. states.
Will I get in trouble for giving someone naloxone?
Good Samaritan laws in many states protect people who administer naloxone in an emergency. Always check your local laws, but in most cases, you're protected.
How long does naloxone last in the body?
It typically lasts 30–90 minutes. Since opioids can stay in the body longer, it’s important to call 911 even after giving naloxone.
What should I do after giving someone naloxone?
Call emergency services, monitor their breathing, and stay with them. If they stop breathing again, give another dose if available.
Does naloxone expire?
Yes, check the expiration date on your product. Expired naloxone may be less effective but is still better than nothing in an emergency.
Can I use naloxone more than once?
Yes. Some overdoses may require more than one dose, especially with strong opioids like fentanyl.
What’s the difference between Narcan and other naloxone products?
Narcan is the most common nasal spray brand. Other forms include injectable naloxone, which may require additional training to use.
Why is it important for everyday people to carry naloxone?
Overdoses can happen anywhere, and quick action can save a life. Carrying naloxone means you’re prepared to help in a critical moment.
Is naloxone part of harm reduction?
Yes. Harm reduction is about meeting people where they are and keeping them safe. Naloxone is a key tool in preventing overdose deaths.
Why do your designs say someone is carrying Narcan?
The apparel and accessories we create are designed to make harm reduction visible. When someone wears a piece from All My Friends, it can signal to others that they’re carrying Narcan and are ready to help in case of an overdose. It’s a small but powerful way to reduce stigma, promote safety, and show solidarity with those impacted by the overdose crisis.
